Manila Records (1899-1994) Now On-Line!

16 May 2011

Digital images of birth, marriage and death certificates for the city of Manila from, from 1899 to 1994, can now be accessed for free at FamilySearch.org, the document search portal of the Family History Center of the Church of the Latter Day Saints.  While images for only one city are available; more records are being prepared for viewing as we speak.  Note, you would also need to register and sign in to access the records.

You can also search through the international index by name, place and location.  The Philippines-specific index is incomplete and contains some erroneous entries; but, should your ancestors’ records be on it, you can find the microfilm number on-line.  For more industrious researchers, you can try using the library catalog to find other indices that will lead you to records relevant to your search.  The CLDS collection includes civil records, church records, notarial, land, military, census, among many.  You can then use the reference number to request from and view the right microfilm at the Family History Center nearest you.

While the on-line index is very helpful, a word of caution:  just because you find a name similar to you ancestor on the search results, it does not mean that person is your ancestor.  Other details like, parents’ names, dates and places should match.  One’s research could be derailed in a big way, due to a single misplaced assumption.
